The end of the calendar year is a good time to think about the new things you want to do different in the coming year. I've made a commitment to improving my overall wellness of body, mind and spirit. I am not waiting for the start of a new year. I'm starting now and I'd love to have you join me.
We can have a stress response to good things and not-so-good things in our lives. Joyful events such as weddings, the birth of a baby or landing our first job can be exciting. Loosing a job, crashing a car or going to a funeral can make us free overwhelmed, anxious or depressed. While these things cause different reactions, they all cause a stress response in our body.
There is growing awareness of how various forms of tapping improve your body's ability to heal. Tapping can reset your body's patterns of response. Tapping can even slow down or prevent dis-ease processes from progressing. One of the most common methods is called EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique. This technique involves tapping various acupressure points while saying affirmations as a way to imprint new patterns of thought in your unconscious mind. Many people have success with the various versions of this technique. It is important to have an open mind when working with these techniques as our attitudes impact the success or failure of these methods. I've experimented a bit with this technique, but have not used it consistently enough to get the results I would like.
This week I completed a health risk assessment for my yearly health insurance plan. This new trend in health care insurance is driven by money under the guise of tracking your health using a point system. Someone determined what the ideal healthy person looks like and then assigned points as an incentive to get you to exercise, lose weight and lower your blood pressure. I found myself very frustrated with the whole process. I log points for sitting at a computer, reading about how to exercise and what foods I should be eating according to a standard that is entrenched in a western medicine philosophy. In order to get discounts, I must keep a log of how much exercise I do, how much water I drink and how many fruits and vegetables I consume. I am placed in a medium risk category because I take blood pressure medicine, I avoid cardiac exercises and I am overweight. It doesn’t matter that I stayed illness-free all year.
